Welds: Seems not like the best job from VanMoof but they are bearable and they seem really strong. Insider info; all test bikes have hand weldings but the production S5 & A5 is going to have them done by the robots. So, we may see some improvement there.

Buttons: I didn’t like the touch & feel of the new buttons (somehow the clicks don’t feel that nice like the buttons of S2 and S3) but they are coming with additional functionality. There are 2 additional buttons now. It wasn’t possible during the test ride but with software updates, riders will be able to customize the use of these additional buttons. In the image below, the button under the boost button is used to set the motor support. The halo ring shows the level in blue color (currently at 2).

Halo Rings: In the beginning, I asked myself, hey where is the matrix display? and I wasn’t optimistic about the halo rings. Sometimes it’s not easy to create new habits instantly especially if you are used to something like the matrix display. The cool thing about the Halo Rings is not the way it shows quantity with the number of lights from bottom to top but the new dimension it brings with color. So different colors mean different things. On the right halo ring, you see the color blue, showing the motor support level, the same halo ring in red shows your speed. It will get better in time.

Brakes: The squeaky brakes of the S3/X3 are remarkable. Honestly, I like them, because a soft touch on the breaks, a little squeak would immediately warn the pedestrians in front of me. No need to use the bell. Anyway, it seems like this won’t be the case with the S5 & A5. The brake calipers and pads are the same but the new disks have air channels which would remove the dust away. The brake levers are thinner, they feel fine. Insider info; they may still replace them with thicker ones.

Kick-lock: This is a major update. It is super accurate and feels more secure, the kick lock button is bigger, so your kick won’t miss it. Unlocks, without rolling the bike.

E-shifter: Shifts seamlessly. I tried to test it, by pushing hard on the pedals during/before and after the shifting moments. It handled all, just fine. At least, I didn’t hear any weird cracks or experience any pedaling in the air.

Torque Sensor: You can’t fake the engine anymore 🙂 this was possible with Electrified S2/X2 and S3/X3, you could slowly pedal and the engine would push the bicycle forward. Thanks to the torque sensor, now the bike knows, how much power you need by analyzing the pressure you put on the pedals. This also helps the e-shifter to smoothly change the gears.

Noise: Thanks to the new tensioner system, the bike is quieter while not pedaling but also while pedaling. The motor sounds are similar to the latest generation S3s. During a ride in the quiet neighborhood, I heard once a sinus wave-like sound which I think came from somewhere under the bottom bracket.

App: A custom app was running on the iPhone with many limitations and work-in-progress notifications. I could change the regional settings of the phone but it wasn’t enough to switch to the US mode. The speedo started to show miles instead of kilometers whereas the ‘Reset’ button (to switch the bike’s region) didn’t appear.

Engine/Boost: Has stronger acceleration, the torque sensor works too but needs testing on hilly ground, will do it in September. Holding the boost made the bike accelerate up to 30 km/h then it was also not that hard to keep up the speed around 30 km/h. Well, this may not be the case for the deliveries since the software I mentioned above is custom. I got some info that the boost will make the bike accelerate more than 27 km/h (in the EU).

Smart Cartridge: Comes with 8GB storage compared to S3’s 1GB. Apparently there are some big plans with ride and environment (air quality, temperature, etc) data.

Accessories: will be available at the end of 2022.

After the conversations I had yesterday; VanMoof built a bicycle that is much easier to service in comparison to the previous generations, especially S3/X3.

Every single part of the bicycle is re-engineered to be easily accessible and replaceable by the bike doctors. Meanwhile, they made the parts cost-effective, less complex and more reliable for the rider, not only as a whole echo system but also piece by piece.

I am expecting the bikes to be geofenced meaning; goodbye to US mode (for the riders in EU). The main reason is the warranty claims from owners in EU who were using either US or Developer mode.

They say this will dramatically decrease the time spent on the bike fixing. Less time means less costs.

S5/A5 looks also quite exquisite, on top of its visual design, it comes with all those technological advancements like new tracking systems, sensors, software and security, as well as modular, robust, easily serviceable parts. If you also have time to wait then go for the S5/A5.

29.03.22 — VanMoof S5 spotted first time in the wild! The photo was taken by Marielle and shared in the VanMoofing facebook group.

Seems like the down tube has a new design which may mean more battery for range and power. The e-shifter seems to be moved to the bottom bracket, hopefully for stepless gear shifting.

It seems that the obstacle detection sensor is inside the smart cartridge. The black area of the rear light is likely to be the sensor. The part above the rear wheel and under the rear light has a ⚡️ icon, it can be the charging and/or the data port. Still unclear whether the S5 has a removable battery and a belt drive.


VanMoof will introduce two new e-bikes: VanMoof S5 & VanMoof A5 during the reveal on Tuesday (April 5). It’s still unclear if there will be an X (X5) frame this year.

We found a trademark application for VanMoof A5 filed in the United States on 24.02.22. It is official.

2021 model VanMoof S3 auspacken, montieren, fahrbereit 

Tipps für die neuen Besitzer: Drehe das Fahrrad auf den Kopf und trage etwas WD40 auf, bevor du das Kabel in den Rahmen schiebst. Nach der ersten vollen Ladung konnte ich mehr als 75 km fahren. Große Reichweite, wenn man viel Auftrieb und die hügelige Stadt bedenkt.

Regelmäßige Höchstgeschwindigkeiten der verschiedenen Modi sind wie: 🇪🇺 Modus 27 km/h, 🇺🇸 Modus 34 km/h und 💨 Modus 37 km/h.  Vielleicht etwas langsamer als das 2020er Modell S3.  Ich habe es jedoch geschafft, mit 43 km/h (wahnsinnig) auf einer flachen Privatstraße im 💨-Modus zu fahren.

Der Tacho liegt aktuell bei 160 km. Der Motor ist leiser als jeder andere S3 den ich hatte.  Ich höre fast kein Rauschen.  Der E-Shifter ist ähnlich, es gibt auch kein Summen, außer wenn er von 4 auf 1 schaltet. Von Zeit zu Zeit erlebe ich jedoch ein knisterndes Hoch- oder Herunterschalten zwischen 2 und 3, manchmal zwischen 3 und 4. Ich habe den VanMoof-Support kontaktiert per Chat zu diesem Problem, dauerte etwa 5-10 Minuten Wartezeit und weitere 10 Minuten, um eine Lösung zu finden. Gut gemacht, VanMoof-Support.

Gespräch mit VanMoof Support über manuelles Schalten für alle S3/X3

Sie beschlossen, mir die neue Firmware v.1.7 zum manuellen Schalten zu schicken. Habe sie direkt installiert. Ich muss ein paar Wochen warten, um das VM-App-Update zum Aktivieren der manuelle Schaltung zu erhalten. 

Ein Hochschalten ist ein Doppeltippen auf die Boost-Taste, ein Herunterschalten ist eine Hold-Glocke-Taste + Doppeltippen auf die Boost-Taste.  

Das Fahrrad schaltet auch automatisch auf 1 herunter, wenn es zum Stillstand kommt.  Ich werde euch nach dem Testen ein weiteres Feedback geben.

VanMoof S3/X3 – Wie schalte ich manuell?

Der Lichtsensor funktioniert einwandfrei. Das Matrix-Display ist klar und scharf und jederzeit bei allen Lichtverhältnissen sichtbar. Ich weiß, dass VanMoof das Wort „Premium“ für die Reifen unter den Fahrradspezifikationen auf der Website entfernt hat, nachdem sie auf Maxxis-Reifen umgestiegen sind.  Allerdings gefällt mir die Optik besser als die Schwalbe-Reifen, bei der Ausdauer bin ich mir noch nicht sicher. Über 2000 km auf Schwalbe-Reifen konnten problemlos gefahren werden.

Quick update on the #VanMoof #S3 Dark 2021 after 2 weeks of ownership. The bicycle came out of the box almost perfect (check the video as proof 😉), the front wheel and motor cable connection were again a bit of a struggle but I was the winner in the end.

Tip for the new owners; turn the bicycle upside down and apply some WD40 before pushing the cable into the frame. After the first full charge, I could ride more than 75 km. Great range when you consider a lot of boost and the hills of the town.

Sustainable top speeds of different modes are like: 🇪🇺 mode 27 km/h, 🇺🇸 mode 34 km/h and 💨 mode 37 km/h. Maybe a bit slower than the 2020 model S3. However, I managed to ride with 43 km/h (insane) on a flat private road using the 💨 mode.

The odometer is currently at 160 km. The motor is quieter than any other S3 that I had. I hear almost no swoosh. E-shifter is alike, there is also no buzz except when it shifts from 4 to 1. However, from time to time I am experiencing a kinda cracky up or downshift between 2 and 3, sometimes between 3 and 4. I contacted VanMoof support via chat regarding this issue, took about 5-10 mins waiting and another 10 minutes to come up with a solution. Well done, VanMoof support.

Conversation with VanMoof Support about Manual Shifting for all S3/X3

They decided to send me the new firmware v.1.7 for manual shifting then I got it installed. I need to wait a few weeks to get the VM App update for enabling the manual shifting.

An upshift is a double tap on the boost button, a downshift is a hold bell button + double tap on the boost button. The bike also shifts down to 1 automatically when it comes to a full stop. I will give you another piece of feedback after I test it.

VanMoof S3/X3 – How to Manual Shift ?

The light sensor works like a charm. The matrix display is clear and sharp, visible at any time during any light condition. I know that VanMoof removed the word ‘premium’ for the tires under the bike specs on the website after they switched to Maxxis tires. However, I like the look more than the Schwalbe tires, not sure about the endurance yet. It was easy peasy to put more than 2000 km on Schwalbe tires without any problem.

I am writing the same things over and over again. How I saw that advertisement online, there were no photos but renders. Yes, just some renders and text about the features. I was amazed it was really like a Tesla on two wheels, gave the order. I am riding this bicycle for 3 years now and it’s a VanMoof.

I am living in a hilly town, even has a song about being hilly, called “Tübingen, warum bist du so hügelig”. Yes, live in a hilly town and have a constant fad to commute to work by bike. The only problem was to ride up the hills early mornings and down the hills in the evenings. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind getting sweaty arriving home but not the other way around.

To find it out you need to try it. So did I and it wasn’t fun. The hardest part was going up an altitude of 155 meters in about 1500 meters ride.

Therefore I ordered my first eBike. A piece of tech. Design masterpiece. Whole package! No need to buy extra lights, fenders, a bell, or a lock. So during the time between the order and the delivery, I was continuously raising my hopes and expectations higher and higher.

It was January 2019 when I greeted the UPS guy. Well, UPS wasn’t that famous in European VM communities at that time, but the VanMoof bike boxes with the TV on them. Those boxes were pretty famous, and I had one of them. A bike box with a TV picture on. You can read the story here TV, or not TV? A year later, UPS caught a trend yet the vibes were negative.

The bike was delivered in one piece, with no hassle like the front wheel installation (Just check the videos above, you’ll understand what I mean). I aligned the handlebar, put the pedals on, registered the bike, made the adjustments while charging it. The whole unpack and set up experience was like: wow! iPhone App, wow! registration, cool! it also has speed and light settings, wow! Matrix display, yeah! kicklock & touch unlock.

Long story short, I had zero hesitation, no regrets. My expectations were already fulfilled, right after I took my first spin. I told myself I should show this bicycle to the world. So mouth a GoPro on the top tube and started to make videos like this.

Using the Electrified S2, I can go anywhere in my town and within the 30–40 km vicinity. Up and down, back and forth, summer, winter, spring or autumn. Without breaking a sweat. I continued to experiment on every possible hill and road. Conclusion was Electrified S2 is more than sufficient for my town.

When VanMoof S3 came out in April 2020. I pre-ordered it. I planned to sell the Electrified S2. I used them both for 3 months long, compared them every day, and at the end kept the Electrified S2. A year VanMoof refreshed the S3 and X3with features like;  Apple’s Find My integration, Powerbank, e-Shifter, pedals, buttons and convinced me to order a refreshed S3. This time my plan is to keep them both.

I am getting a lot of questions, especially about VanMoof S3’s performance on tacking hills. I don’t know any other bicycle which looks so good, comes with everything you (toolbox, pump, lights, lock, alarm, mudguards, etc) need out of the box and has a longer range with a lot of power.

VanMoof is one of the frontiers, starting with the smart bikes, now and then they are implementing newer features in their lineup of bicycles, like their recently refreshed S3 and X3 models, with Apple Find My integration .

Integrating the latest technologies points the focus on the interfaces the bicycles are offering to the users. Most people still prefer, jump and ride rather than dealing with complications.

Simplest example; buttons.

The bell button should ring the bell. One button, one feature, nothing more, nothing less. On the other hand, tech-oriented riders may wish to have additional intuitive approaches, like the long press, double press.

How about the feedback you receive? Do you wish to receive sounds, tones, haptic or visual feedback? When we increase the features, we increase the complexity, therefore the complexity in usability.

The best practice is to address the essential senses of the user while interacting with the device. In this decade the best user experience is through displays, displays with a proper user interfaces.

Let’s take a quick look at the current options out there with respect to the displays and apps the bicycle manufacturers are offering.

Angell offers a dedicated display, which is integrated into the handlebar.

Angell app, together with the integrated display is quite nice. The app connects to the bicycle and works with the integrated display in harmony. Users can start the music on the phone then control it via the integrated display. Similarly, add a destination in the navigation and follow the instructions over the display. The integrated display also serves as a gym bike display if you like, so you can say burn 300 calories or ride for 30 minutes and watch the progress over the display.

Cowboy 4 offers a phone dock with wireless charging integrated into the handlebar.

Cowboy 3 is equipped with a battery indicator on the top tube but no display, the company wants their riders to download their official app.

The Cowboy app supports the bike with features like on/off, lights, assist levels, cockpit view (speed, battery %, distance, duration), and navigation. The illustration above is from Cowboy 4 (available in September), seems like they redesigned the stem and moved the battery indicator also introduced a built-in quad lock with a wireless charging unit. Just like it’s shown the user will put their phone on the bike and also use it as a control center. Controls, navigation, activity, connections, leaderboards. Sounds like seamless integration and people will love it.

VanMoof, how about VanMoof? The top tube indicator was there since smart bikes. Battery indicator combined with speedometer. S2/X2 models are the first time the matrix display was introduced, an seamless integrated unique design with S3/X3 they improved it.

The matrix display indicates different states of the bike such as on/off, lock/unlock/alarm, connected/disconnected, assist levels, localization selections, gear, battery indicator, and last but not least the speed. The latest VanMoofs models also have speakers which support the visual interaction with sound effects.

There is also an official iOS and Android app, for displaying the current location of the bike (this is misleading since the bike’s location is the location of the phone when connected to the bike), rides (this is pretty inaccurate), settings (assist, local, alarm, unlock, light), help (FAQs, error codes, video tutorials), and bikes (switch between other VMs). However no navigation, activity integration, social options like leaderboards, etc.

Extending VanMoof’s Matrix Display

Matrix display is a unique feature of the VanMoof bicycles and with refresh models, it is also readable under direct sunlight. However, while staring at the top tube the rider may lose focus. Matrix display should stay but should be relocated, especially if VanMoof decides to extend the app into a dashboard.

Relocating the Matrix Display to the handle bar ?

If the mobile phone will serve as the main display with VM or 3rd party apps, maybe having the matrix display next to the handles/buttons integrated into the handlebar would be a good idea. In the example below, matrix displays show relevant button function while the dashboard is attached.
