We only knew about what was written on the fact sheet and advertised on the VanMoof website & social channels.

In parallel, vanmoofer. was observing the bits and pieces, trying to find out the clues and sharing them via web vanmoofer.com, twitter, and insta.

Let’s summarize what we already know:

Goodbye to matrix display. 
S5 & A5 are equipped with smart and colorful ‘Halo Rings’ and demand riders and buy an additional phone mouth & case (SP Connect) and benefit from the VanMoof App’s dashboard features. To maximize the user experience, the handlebar grips feature haptic engines.

Higher torque (and a new torque sensor).
VanMoof kept the tradition and upgraded the engine and the acceleration. The new lineup has a torque value of 68Nm compared to S3 & X3’s 59Nm, S2 & X2’s 45Nm. S5 & A5 also have a torque sensor, and this is great.

New frame types & sizes.
X-frame got replaced by the A-frame. S-frame got a little smaller.

US Patent Application Publication, hints new features of the VanMoof S5 & A5.

According to the patent application, VanMoof’s new lineup may feature biometric sensors embodied as speech analysis and fingerprint scanners. The on/off/bell button will probably come with the built-in fingerprint scanner.

The patent application also mentions a built-in microphone for measuring the ambient sound to regulate the speaker volume and use of voice control. The long-awaited custom bell sound and more will also be possible for the new VanMoof S5 & A5.

The sensors and units of the bikes are listed in the patent application. One interesting point is use of an alternator. It says the battery is chargeable from the alternator, meaning the S5 & A5 may feature recuperation and charge the batteries by regenerating power. The built-in speaker coupled with a sound amplifier, so it’s a louder speaker.

Conclusion: these are the newest features of the new VanMoof S5 & A5.

On April 21st, VanMoof introduced the bike to the public, and the orders were open for everyone. The first shipments took place in late May. However, the delivery times were already three months on April 21st, went up to eight months.

Hold on tight!

After the reveal next week, VanMoof may announce a similar ordering process with invitation codes or open orders for everyone. In both cases, there will be a lot of demand, which will increase the delivery times like a bandit.

If VanMoof may offer invitation codes, then the riders will have the opportunity to get the new bikes earlier. If you are already a rider, you may have the S5 already before summer.

Searching for an invitation code on social media somehow catches people’s attention. It’s an advertisement and gamification tactic.

The second option sounds more chaotic because of the demand and potential rush. It may cause server malfunctions and stress to the buyers.

Features

We were already listing the expected features on vanmoofer.com and in this article. It’s great to see that they are becoming true with the new lineup. Thanks to VanMoof, for listening to their riders again. To get quick insight here is a figure for you.

If the features are the dominant factor for your buying decision, then it is clear. Although the new lineup is the clear winner, consider the potential bugs the new lineup may bring.

The first batches of S3/X3 had bugs like bent disks, wobbly wheels, drained batteries, loose mudguards, e-shifter, and rear hub issues. Most of these problems were fixed within a year, eventually, they introduced the refreshed S3 & X3 models in April 2021.

Let’s think positively and hope that VanMoof spent enough time on quality control and product testing for the new lineup.

On March 8, VanMoof increased the prices of S3 & X3 by €150. Reasons for the increase are probably, the supply change distributions, Covid-19, and the Ukraine-Russia war.

“The future is shaping up, fast.”

This slogan emphasizes that the new product will be fast, faster than the current S3 and X3 lineup. As you know the S3 and X3 can go up to 37 km/h in off-road, 32 km/h in US, 25 km/h in EU and 24 km/h in JP modes.

In other words, we should expect something which can go beyond these speed limits. There is doubt that it will be a speed pedelec like the Mate Bike and can go up to 45 km/h or maybe even more with an easter egg like the off-road mode.

In Europe, such speed pedelecs require registration, license plate, insurance, helmet and can’t be ridden on bicycle and pedelec ways.

We’ll learn more about upcoming upgrades on S3 and X3. If this new product will be named S4, then the upgraded versions of S3 and X3 will be called S5 and X5. These are all speculations at the moment. Let’s hold on tight and see what will VanMoof reveal next week.

The photos VanMoof published has the name VM V, so we may expect similar naming strategy like Tesla. The handle bar on the photos also looks like V shaped. So next week VanMoof may reveal the model V.

Recently Polestar introduced a eScooter with a price tag of 4500€, Super 73 and Mate Bikes have a price tag of 2500€ so we can expect the price of the VanMoof V to be between 2500€ to 4500€ (official price is 3498€).

By introducing a high priced model next week, VanMoof may strategically lower the prices of the pedelec line up.

Fat tires, stronger lights and front suspension are other features that we can see in the images VanMoof shared through social media.

Tipps für die neuen Besitzer: Drehe das Fahrrad auf den Kopf und trage etwas WD40 auf, bevor du das Kabel in den Rahmen schiebst. Nach der ersten vollen Ladung konnte ich mehr als 75 km fahren. Große Reichweite, wenn man viel Auftrieb und die hügelige Stadt bedenkt.

Regelmäßige Höchstgeschwindigkeiten der verschiedenen Modi sind wie: Modus 27 km/h, Modus 34 km/h und Modus 37 km/h.  Vielleicht etwas langsamer als das 2020er Modell S3.  Ich habe es jedoch geschafft, mit 43 km/h (wahnsinnig) auf einer flachen Privatstraße im -Modus zu fahren.

Der Tacho liegt aktuell bei 160 km. Der Motor ist leiser als jeder andere S3 den ich hatte.  Ich höre fast kein Rauschen.  Der E-Shifter ist ähnlich, es gibt auch kein Summen, außer wenn er von 4 auf 1 schaltet. Von Zeit zu Zeit erlebe ich jedoch ein knisterndes Hoch- oder Herunterschalten zwischen 2 und 3, manchmal zwischen 3 und 4. Ich habe den VanMoof-Support kontaktiert per Chat zu diesem Problem, dauerte etwa 5-10 Minuten Wartezeit und weitere 10 Minuten, um eine Lösung zu finden. Gut gemacht, VanMoof-Support.

Sie beschlossen, mir die neue Firmware v.1.7 zum manuellen Schalten zu schicken. Habe sie direkt installiert. Ich muss ein paar Wochen warten, um das VM-App-Update zum Aktivieren der manuelle Schaltung zu erhalten. 

Ein Hochschalten ist ein Doppeltippen auf die Boost-Taste, ein Herunterschalten ist eine Hold-Glocke-Taste + Doppeltippen auf die Boost-Taste.  

Das Fahrrad schaltet auch automatisch auf 1 herunter, wenn es zum Stillstand kommt.  Ich werde euch nach dem Testen ein weiteres Feedback geben.

Der Lichtsensor funktioniert einwandfrei. Das Matrix-Display ist klar und scharf und jederzeit bei allen Lichtverhältnissen sichtbar. Ich weiß, dass VanMoof das Wort „Premium“ für die Reifen unter den Fahrradspezifikationen auf der Website entfernt hat, nachdem sie auf Maxxis-Reifen umgestiegen sind.  Allerdings gefällt mir die Optik besser als die Schwalbe-Reifen, bei der Ausdauer bin ich mir noch nicht sicher. Über 2000 km auf Schwalbe-Reifen konnten problemlos gefahren werden.

Tip for the new owners; turn the bicycle upside down and apply some WD40 before pushing the cable into the frame. After the first full charge, I could ride more than 75 km. Great range when you consider a lot of boost and the hills of the town.

Sustainable top speeds of different modes are like: mode 27 km/h, mode 34 km/h and mode 37 km/h. Maybe a bit slower than the 2020 model S3. However, I managed to ride with 43 km/h (insane) on a flat private road using the mode.

The odometer is currently at 160 km. The motor is quieter than any other S3 that I had. I hear almost no swoosh. E-shifter is alike, there is also no buzz except when it shifts from 4 to 1. However, from time to time I am experiencing a kinda cracky up or downshift between 2 and 3, sometimes between 3 and 4. I contacted VanMoof support via chat regarding this issue, took about 5-10 mins waiting and another 10 minutes to come up with a solution. Well done, VanMoof support.

They decided to send me the new firmware v.1.7 for manual shifting then I got it installed. I need to wait a few weeks to get the VM App update for enabling the manual shifting.

An upshift is a double tap on the boost button, a downshift is a hold bell button + double tap on the boost button. The bike also shifts down to 1 automatically when it comes to a full stop. I will give you another piece of feedback after I test it.

The light sensor works like a charm. The matrix display is clear and sharp, visible at any time during any light condition. I know that VanMoof removed the word ‘premium’ for the tires under the bike specs on the website after they switched to Maxxis tires. However, I like the look more than the Schwalbe tires, not sure about the endurance yet. It was easy peasy to put more than 2000 km on Schwalbe tires without any problem.
